- channel width
- Channel depth
- Bed load size (pebble score)
- Velocity
- Gradient

- We were not to go in deeper than Wellington height into the river
- We had to stay in our groups
- It would be good to station larger members of the group downstream
- Avoid areas of the river with overhanging branches
